- Title:
- Lord Curzon (1859-1925): Early Life: Papers Relating to Persia
- Scope & Content:
-
This series contains papers relating to George Nathaniel Curzon's interest in Persia. Mss Eur F112/365 and Mss Eur F112/366 consist of two notebooks containing Curzon’s handwritten notes on his travels in Persia during 1889-90, while Mss Eur F111/71 contains notes, reports and correspondence mainly relating to the affairs of the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation Limited, of which Curzon was a director. The remaining files and volumes are comprised of notes, reports, memoranda and correspondence, which discuss matters in Persia more generally, although with a particular focus on internal affairs in Persia and developments in British policy regarding the country. Much of the correspondence makes reference to Curzon's book, Persia and the Persian Question, with many correspondents complimenting Curzon on his book and, in some cases, submitting suggested revisions for future editions.
Notable correspondents include the following: Arthur James Balfour (Lord Balfour), Prime Minister Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil (Lord Salisbury), Henry Lake Wells, Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, Percy Molesworth Sykes, Albert Houtum-Schindler, and John Richard Preece, British Consul at Ispahan [Isfahan].
Other types of material besides those already mentioned include maps, plans, photograph negatives and one photograph. The series contains material dating from 1876 to 1923; however, most of the material dates from between 1889 and 1898.
