- Title:
- Lord Curzon, Foreign Secretary 1919-24: the Near and Middle East: general
- Scope & Content:
-
This series of files consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, maps, and other papers relating to the settlement of the former Ottoman territories in the Middle and Near East following the First World War. A number of countries are concerned, including Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Transjordan, the Hejaz, Nejd, Greece, Lebanon, Georgia, and Armenia. Much of the discussion is based on the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916 and constitutes the build-up to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and the Conference of Lausanne.
The correspondence is mostly interdepartmental in nature, involving officials at the India Office, Foreign Office, Colonial Office, War Cabinet, War Office, Admiralty, and Air Ministry. Further correspondence comes from the political, military, and diplomatic offices in the region, both British and European.
The last file in the series, Mss Eur F112/281, is more specifically concerned with the transfer of responsibility for Middle Eastern affairs from the Foreign Office to the Colonial Office in 1920.
