Correspondence, Journals and Papers relating to Lewis Pelly's journey to Riyadh
- Scope & Content:
-
The contents of the files relate to Lewis Pelly's stay in Kuwait and journey to Riyadh January-March 1865 to meet with Amir Faisal ibn Turki al-Sa'ud of the Wahhabi.
The correspondence within the files includes discussions with the Secretary to the Government of Bombay of the reports required and Pelly's thoughts on the ongoing dispute between the Sultan of Muscat and the Wahhabis; correspondence with Amir Faisal regarding arrangements to travel to Riyadh; Edwin Dawes of Berenice regarding his accompanying Pelly on the journey; and James Charles Edwards, Uncovenanted Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf, regarding arrangements during Pelly's absence. Also included is a file of correspondence regarding the conduct of Doctor William Henry Colvill both during a previous absence by Pelly in England and in providing secret and confidential information regarding the trip to Riyadh to the Royal Geographical Society.
The files also include Pelly's draft journal recounting each day from the day he arrived in Kuwait, his journey to Riyadh and his return journey to Bahrain and recording every detail of the journeys and people he met with en-route. Also included is a 'fair copy' of the journal, however this only contains the key dates from the journey and is not as complete as Pelly's draft version.
Other items of interest in the files include a history of the Shatt al-Arab watercourse; notes on people and tribes of note within the Najd territory; a minute by Sir Bartle Frere, Governor of Bombay, on the Wahhabi power; statements from William Palgrave's book 'A Narrative Of A Years Journey Through Central And Eastern Arabia, 1865' and requesting that Pelly verify the truth, or otherwise, in the statements; and papers relating to the publishing of Pelly's account of his journey and requesting a talk from him that could be read out at one of their meetings.
