The files contain notes, correspondence, press cuttings, sketches, a journal, and a published paper relating to affairs in the Persian Gulf during Lewis Pelly's term as Political Resident there (1862-1873).
The files include Pelly's explorations and travels throughout the Gulf region, and especially his trip to Riyadh and exploration of the coastline from Bandar-e-Lengeh to Qeshm and Bandar Abbas, accounts of which were presented before the Royal Geographical Society.
William Gifford Palgrave's publication 'A personal narrative of a years journey through Central Arabia' is referred to in Pelly's notes on his trip to Riyadh (Mss Eur F126/65, ff 7-44) and Mss Eur F126/68 contains press cuttings of reviews of the publication. Palgrave's journey and subsequent publication were of interest to both Lewis Pelly and the Government of India as Palgrave made a number of statements and assertions within his book that differed from accepted knowledge of the Persian Gulf and Arabia at that time.
