Add MS 89002/2

Personal and professional letters received, including some letters by Upward (interspersed) in autograph draft. In addition to Upward's occasional letters in draft, there is a folder of 46 personal letters (1932-37) from Upward to Shirley Munro (Add MS 89002/2/1).

There are several folders of letters from (and occasionally draft letters to) Upward's publishers. Whilst these folders contain the majority of publishing-related correspondence, a few letters regarding publication (for example, speculative publishing correspondence, and some letters concerning magazine publication) can be found in the yearly general correspondence folders. Thus, for instance, a letter (1979) from Julian Barnes, as Deputy Literary Editor of the New Statesman, declining 'these prose pieces' ('I don't find them suitable') can be found in Add MS 89002/2/12).

In addition to yearly folders of general correspondence (which include a number of letters from the academic community) and to folders of correspondence with publishers, there are individual folders of correspondence with: Laurie Little, Francesco Binni, Peter Parker, Katherine Bucknell, Alan Walker, the National Portrait Gallery, and the British Library.
