Papers relating to George Canning's political career, including those relating to the following positions: Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1795-1799), Paymaster of the Forces (1800-1801), Treasurer of the Navy (1804-1806), Foreign Secretary (1807-1809 and 1822-1827), and as Prime Minister (1827). Papers relating to India created during Canning's tenure as Commissioner of the Board of Control (1799-1800) and President of the Board of Control (1816-1821) can be found amongst the Diplomatic Matters series, as well as papers created during Canning's appointment as British Ambassador to Portugal (1814-1816).
Includes: extensive political correspondence with political colleagues such as William Pitt the younger, Lord Liverpool, the Duke of Wellington, William Huskisson, the Duke of Portland, Sir Robert Peel, Lord Amherst, the Duke of Portland, and Spencer Perceval; copies of Canning's letters to particular political individuals, including whilst Foreign Secretary 1807-1809; correspondence with Members of Parliament, Peers, and members of the Royal Family, including King George III and King George VI; papers relating to Catholic Emancipation; papers relating to the Abolition of Slavery, including correspondence with William Wilberforce; Constituency correspondence relating to Liverpool and Harwich.
