Established in 1950 the West Africa Study Circle is now the leading international specialist society for the study of West African stamps, postal stationery and postal history. The society holds bi-annual meetings in early March and November at the Royal Philatelic Society’s premises in Devonshire Place, London. It also holds an informal annual meeting in Salisbury each June or July. Every two years the Society hosts a weekend conference in addition to two annual society postal auctions for its members. The society also disseminates its research and activities in a variety of publications. The society’s award winning journal Cameo has been published since 1975 and it also publishes relevant monographs and a regular Secretary’s Newsletter detailing news of the Study Circle and its meetings.

These journals are invaluable for individuals conducting philatelic or postal history based research. They are also invaluable for social and cultural historians since they provide insights into the history of collecting, collectors and collection based research as well as the social networks for a major international society running since the second half of the twentieth century to the present day.
