Scope & Content:

Signed contracts with individual UK theatres. The contracts, supplied by D'Oyly Carte, are pre-printed proformas with details added by hand, indicating that a given theatre has 'booked your Company' (D'Oyly Carte Opera Company) for a specified number of nights; for its part, the theatre undertakes to provide lighting, scenery and 'good musicians'.

Date-spans of the files refer to dates of performance-runs (rather than the earlier date that a contract was raised, which may have been the previous year). Particularly in later years, there is often a supplementary or alternative contract for a given 'run' prepared by the theatre or its agent, and very occasionally a contract is accompanied by an item of related correspondence.
