- Title:
- John Le Neve's collection of monumental inscriptions
- Scope & Content:
-
Twelve manuscript volumes of monumental inscriptions, dating from 1400 to 1716, collected from various churches in England, by John Le Neve.
These are sorted by year, and usually written in the hand of John Le Neve. Some printed sources and letters from Le Neve's friends, informing him of various inscriptions are interleaved.
Some inscriptions in these volumes have been contributed by friends of the author. In Harley MS 3616 is a table of the marks used to distinguish the entries of the various contributors. These contributors are:
- 1. 'Peter Le Neve, Norroy K. of Arms'.
- 2. 'Mr Stanton, a Stonecutter'.
- 3. 'The Rev. & learned Tho. Baker, of St John's Coll. Camb'.
- 4. 'The compiler's brother-in-law, Mr Len. Boughton, of York'.
- 5. 'Mr Manfell'.
- 6. 'The Bishop of the Diocese'.
- 7 'Mr Jas Martin, of New Coll. Oxon'.
- 8. 'Rev. Charles Thayer'.
- 9. 'Mr Handy, a Stonecutter'.
- 10. 'Mr Bird, Do'.
- 11. 'Mr Ben. Lamb. Verger of St George’s chapel Windsor'.
- 12. 'The Rev. Hugh Todd. DD. Preb. Of Carlisle'.
- 13. 'Mr. Palmer, a Stonecutter'.
- 14. 'Mr John Bowles, Public Librarian, Oxford'.
- 15. 'Mr Richard Rawlinson M.A. & F.R.S. of St John's Coll. Oxford'.
- 16. 'Mr John Warburton, of Hexham in Northumb'.
The stonecutters appear to have communicated the inscriptions they had themselves set up.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
