Correspondence of Granville Leveson-Gower, first Earl Granville, with Henrietta (Harriet) Ponsonby, Countess of Bessborough

Scope & Content:

Letters between Lord Granville (1773-1846) and Lady Bessborough (1761-1821), with a few letters written on their behalf and a small number of related letters to or from other friends and family members. Arranged in two sequences (Letters from Lord Granville, returned to him after Lady Bessborough’s death in 1821, and letters from Lady Bessborough), in chronological order, by Castalia Leveson-Gower, Countess Granville (1847-1938), in preparation for her edition of Lord Granville Leveson Gower: Private Correspondence (1916). Many letters are annotated in pencil with dates and names, and some are marked by her ‘omit’, i.e. not intended for inclusion in the published edition.

Many letters from Lord Granville to Lady Bessborough do not survive. Some were burnt by her after reading (see letters 1798), others were said to have been burned by her sons after her death (Janet Gleeson, An Aristocratic Affair (2006), p. xiii), and others may have been destroyed by Lord Granville after they were returned to him (Lord Granville Leveson Gower: Private Correspondence, vol. I, p. xxviii). The majority of letters from Lady Bessborough to Lord Granville are either wholly excluded or abridged in the published edition.

Included in each file are typed transcripts made by Castalia Leveson-Gower of entire letters or sections of letters she omitted from the published edition. Some transcripts were never intended by her for inclusion, others were removed during later stages of editing.
