- When the Indo-European Telegraph Department became the Indo-European Branch of the Director-General of Indian Telegraphs, it was maintained separately with its own records and record-keeping system. Prior to 1891 all papers were registered in three divisions, with separate file prefixes: Persian Gulf Section, IEG; Persian Section, IEP; General, IE. The numbers assigned to the files are in one continuous sequence but distinguished by these prefixes. From 1891, all papers were registered in one sequence, IE, without further differentiation. However, subject based bundles started under the previous system continued in existence. These files (L/PWD/7/591-1223) were transferred to London in 1893 when telegraph administration was once more dealt with directly by the India Office.
