- In 1901 the Institute of Civil Engineers set up the Engineering Standards Committee to establish standards in engineering. It rapidly gained the support and involvement of the Institutes of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, the Iron and Steel Institute and the Institute of Naval Architects. The Director-General of the Indo-European Telegraph served on the sub-committee of the Electrical Committee on Telegraphs and Telephones. In 1914 the Section Electrical Committee of the Engineering Standards Association amalgamated with the National Committee of the International Electro-Technical Commission. M G Simpson represented the India Office on this joint body and took over the duties of the Director-in-Chief on the Telegraphs and Telephones Sub-committee.
