Administrative Context:: The conflicting designations on the covers of Establishment Branch Confidential Proceedings listed here do not allow clear inferences to be made about the section-by-section recording of such proceedings. Accordingly this section of the list is presented in a single chronological sequence of proceedings and files, irrespective of their originating sections. In 1919, the designation 'Establishment Confidential' began to be used for the personal files of Indian Political Service officers. These files were usually recorded in annual groups after officers died, retired or otherwise left the service, or were promoted to Resident (and were therefore no longer the subject of regular confidential reports), whichever occurred first. The files include applications for Political employment with references, notices of appointment and confirmation in the Service, regular confidential reports by superior officers, notes of commendations and misdemeanours, and other papers of a personal nature. The 1930 files contain a single sequence of Part II files for serving officers.
