- Scope & Content:
- The files provide a detailed account of Government of India policy towards Gandhi and his civil disobedience movements, including the treatment of Gandhi and other members of the Indian National Congress while in prison, and the policy to be adopted during his periodic fasts. The papers give information on the course of the civil disobedience movements and government measures to contain them. The bulk of the papers relate to the period following 1940 and in particular to the Quit India Movement of 1942 and its aftermath. Also included are four files (R/3/1/330-333) relating to policy to recaptured Indian National Army and Regiment 950 personnel; and an isolated Police Department file on the question of armed police taking over duties performed by troops for the duration of the war.
