- The statements were prepared annually by the Bengal Military Auditor-General and were submitted by him to the Governor-General for transmission to the Court of Directors. The main item in each volume is a detailed statement of all expenses incurred during the year in all branches of the Military Establishment, calculated in sicca and sonaut rupees until 1836 and subsequently in Company's rupees. From 1828 there are indexes to the main headings of the statements, and before this date accompanying General Abstracts and/or Comparative Statements provide tables of contents. Each statement is accompanied by an appendix showing the costs of various auxiliary units and by a covering letter from the Military Auditor-General to the Governor-General containing remarks on the statement and estimates for the coming year. The volumes also include the following separate returns: list of all officers on the Establishment 1785-1802; all officers receiving allowances under more than one head 1790-1802; all staff appointments from 1803; troops at Java and Amboyna 1812-1816; Local Corps appertaining to the Civil Establishment from 1823; Subsidiary Corps from 1828. In addition, there are Civil Statements for 1785, 1787, 1789 and 1793. The volumes for the years 1786, 1788, 1795-1798, 1808, 1822 and 1844 are missing.
