- After the abolition of their China trade monopoly the East India Company's factory at Canton was closed down in 1834 and replaced by a trade superintendency under the British Crown. The Company however, as ruler of India on the Crown's behalf, continued to maintain a strong interest in Chinese affairs and during the First Opium War with China (1840-42) it made a significant naval and military contribution to the British Expeditionary Force.
