- Java was captured from the Dutch and their French allies by a British naval and military expedition in 1811 and placed under a Lieutenant-Governor responsible to the Governor-General in Calcutta. At the conclusion of the Napoleonic War it was restored to the Netherlands who formally took possession in December 1816.
