- Until 1887, when the Indian Nursing Service was founded by Lady Roberts, wife of the then Commander-in-Chief India, nursing in military hospitals in India was carried out by medical orderlies detailed from regiments and other units. In 1903 the title was changed to Queen Alexandra's Military Nursing Service for India. The nurses were recruited in England and they had to pass a selection board composed of members of both the British and Indian Nursing Services.
