- Scope & Content:
- The volumes contain collections of papers relating to acts passed by the Government of India and the Provincial Governments. A copy of the final print of the act, usually of smaller format than the other papers, textually identical to the 'Bill as passed' but with a table of contents in the case of a lengthy act, is included in the relevant collection. Other papers present are: the original bill, to which a statement of objects and reasons is always annexed; the opinions of various officials; petitions for or against the bill; correspondence; amendments (sometimes the entire bill amended); reports of select committees; copies of debates in Council and the later Legislative Assembly during discussions of the final bill. Only one aborted bill appears to be included (see IOR/L/PJ/5/4). The collections are arranged chronologically in the order of the acts to which they relate. They are not indexed and are best approached via the series of Acts and Codes in IOR/V/8 Similar, but less full collections, can be found in IOR/L/PJ/6-7 and in the files of the relevant departments
