Title:

East India Company General Cash Journals

Scope & Content:

Monthly registers of payments, divided into sections according to the main head of account of the particular transaction. They record the date of payment at the Company's Treasury or the Bank of England, brief details of the transaction and the amount. Each section was totalled monthly and the total transferred to the main Cash Journal [L/AG/1/5]. The page reference in the main Cash Journal is usually given against the monthly totals. From 1861, the system was amended slightly and Numbered Registers of Payments were introduced [L/AG/6].

The transactions in the volumes include:

Home service salaries and pension
Home service widows' funds
Poplar Fund pensions
Military (Lord Clive) Fund
Civil leave pay, annuities and pensions
General pensions
Military and marine pay, furlough and pensions
Bills of exchange
Dividends on transfer loans
Carnatic debts.

From 1839, the books were maintained in parts, the subjects being divided between them.
