Scope & Content:

The decision of whether an officer was regarded as civil or military for the purpose of these volumes was determined by the head of account responsible for officer's pay, and there does not appear to be any consistency in how that decision was made or applied within these records.

From 1920 the pay of officers in permanent civil employment was issued by the High Commissioner of India.
