- War gratuities due to survivors of all ranks of the armed forces who served in the 1939-1945 War were, in general, paid not to them direct but to the credit of an account in their name in the Post Office Savings Bank. The final pay account should show the amount due to an individual, but details of credits given to the Savings Bank by the India Office appear in files of general correspondence of the Accountant General's Department (see sections L/AG/29/1 and 29/2). The amount due to deceased personnel was paid with any other credits to their estates, and particulars may be obtained on individual estate files in the general correspondence
