Up to 1800, pensions of members of the home staff were issued on the books of either home salaries [IOR/L/AG/19] or General Pensions [L/AG/21/6]. Pensions awarded to members of the staff who were retired under one the several reorganisations of the Company between 1815 and 1860, and those who retired in the normal way before 1815, were frequently charged against one of the several sub-divisions of General Pensions.

Payment of the pensions of members of the India Office who retired before 1 Apr 1937 was made by the India Office. Payment to those who retired on or after that date, and those who retired before that date from a Department of the UK Government and had served previously in the India Office, was made by the Paymaster General's Office, which recovered from the India Office, on the authority of the Treasury, such proportion of the total amount of pension as related to service either in the India Office before 1 Apr 1937, or other service in India under the Government of India. Details of some such recoveries are at L/AG/21/6/27-34,45]. Recoveries from India ceased on 1 Apr 1955 when the pensions became wholly the liability of the UK Government.
