- Service pensions were first awarded to regular officers of the East India Company Army in 1796 (before that date pensions had occasionally been awarded on an 'ad hoc' basis as a personal distinction and these are recorded in L/AG/9/4/1-12). Under the 1796 rules an officer with 25 years' service in India (including 3 years' furlough) was permitted to retire on full pay. Officers who had served less than 25 years but more than 9 were allowed to retire on grounds of health on a reduced pension, generally the half pay of their last rank. Although service pensions were introduced in 1796 the India Office Records payment books for these pensions only exist from 1825. It should be noted however that formal requests for admission to pension in the years 1799-1835 are recorded in Auditor's References, D/153-252, indexes Z/D/28-32. Certain officers who had been Lieutenant Colonels Commandant of regiments were never technically retired but received a Colonel's Allowance in lieu of a regular pension - see series L/AG/21/12. For pensions paid under the Lord Clive Fund see series L/AG/21/10. The series L/AG/21/11 relates to pensions paid in the UK/Europe only. For admissions of Indian Army regular officers to pensions in India 1898-1913 see L/AG/26/14/1. For pensions paid to Indian Army regular officers in the Colonies/Dominions (except India) 1860-1970 see the series L/AG/21/44 and for Canada/USA 1952-69 see the series L/AG/21/43. To use volumes L/AG/21/11/181-316 (1956-1967) it is necessary to refer to two sets of card indexes - these indexes are presently being transcribed for use in the OIOC Reading Room. Against an officer's name in the index will appear one of the A references given below. For instance if the reference given is A/1-1, and assuming the officer survived for the entire period 1956-67, his name will appear in all the volumes designated A/1-1 ie L/AG/21/11/181 (1956-60), L/AG/21/11/224 (1960-1964) and L/AG/21/11/268 (1964-67). The card index also records the dates of death of those pensioners who died during the years 1956-1967.
