- Administrative Context:
- Warrant officers in the East India Company/Indian Army held the ranks of Sub-Conductor and Conductor and served mainly in the Ordnance, Commissariat and Public Works Departments. The Ordnance Department became the Indian Army Ordnance Corps in 1922. The Commissariat Department underwent several changes of title: Commissariat/Transport Department 1889, Supply and Transport Corps 1901, Indian Army Service Corps 1923, Royal Indian Army Service Corps 1935. Before 1860 Sub-Conductors were recruited from the East India Company Town Major's List (called Effective Supernumeraries in Madras) which in turn was largely recruited from the NCOs (Non-Commissioned Officers) of the East India Company European Regiments, although occasionally NCOs of British Regiments were appointed to it. After 1860 the Unattached List (as the Town Major's List was now called) was recruited exclusively from NCOs of British Army Regiments. Conductors were eligible for promotion within their departments to the superior grade of Departmental Officer. Departmental Officers held the ranks of Deputy Assistant Commissary, Deputy Commissary and Commissary. Eventually these ranks were given equivalent honorary officer ranks ranging from Honorary Lieutenant to Honorary Major, the 'Honorary' in due course being discarded and the ranks assimilated to those of Regular Officers.
