- User Conditions:
- Administrative Context:
- In 1823, the Company agreed to pay an annual sum of £60,000 in quarterly instalments as a contribution towards the retiring pay or pension of members of the King's troops who had served in India. The terms of the agreement were incorporated in the Act 4 Geo IV c 71. Payment at that rate was continued to 1860, when it was replaced by an annual flat rate of £3 10s 0d per man, which was again replaced in 1870 by a system which permitted a calculation to be made for each officer and other rank of the home forced actually admitted to pension, and for the widows and dependants of home force personnel, as to the portions of total service which were actually spent in and out of India. The same system was applied to personnel of the Indian services lent to the Home Government. From time to time, the basis of the calculations was considered by Committees and minor amendments made where necessary, but the broad basis remained until the Non-Effective Account was finally abolished during the 1939-45 War.
