- The Military Estate Papers which commence in 1849 (Bengal), 1851 (Madras) and 1852 (Bombay), comprise estate accounts, wills, inventories and particulars of next-of-kin. The series relates mainly to European regular officers, medical officers and warrant/departmental officers (including subordinate medical staff) of the EIC/Indian Army but there are entries in the early volumes for European other ranks of the EIC Army. About one in every five entries has a will attached. As with the Treasury Deposits, from 1895 the Bengal volumes of Estate Papers comprise All-India returns. The series proper ends in 1937, but is continued for the years 1938-1953 in the annual files of the Accountant General's Department [IOR/L/AG/29/1C]. With the exception of IOR/L/AG/34/40/75-85 none of the volumes of Estate Papers contain indexes. Nevertheless the indexes to Treasury Deposits 1849-1919 [IOR/Z/L/AG/34/17-21] also serve as a general index to Estate Papers since for every entry in Treasury Deposits there is usually a corresponding entry in Estate Papers. Regular cross-references to Treasury Deposits appear in Bengal Estate Papers from 1856/57 [IOR/L/AG/34/40/18], in Madras Estate Papers from 1866 [IOR/L/AG/34/40/131] and in Bombay Estate Papers from 1860 [IOR/L/AG/34/40/141]. From about the same time, the cross-references are recorded in the list itself, for instance, the list shows that Bengal Military Estate Papers for 1856/57 [IOR/L/AG/34/40/19] correspond with Bengal Treasury Deposits, Vol 4 [IOR/L/AG/34/33/4] ff 481-497.
