- Scope & Content:
- Arising out of the grant of independence to India and Pakistan in 1947, some British subjects of European (mainly United Kingdom) origin found that they could no longer obtain or maintain suitable employment in those countries and general authority were given to the United Kingdom High Commissioners to repatriate them, and members of their family, if it were possible. In some cases, grants for the purpose of purchasing warm clothing, and for other purposes, were given. In all cases, repatriation was given subject to the head of the family giving a legally enforceable undertaking to refund all expenditure incurred on his behalf. The undertaking was enforced in all cases in which it was considered appropriate to do so. The bulk of the repatriations were made between 1947 and 1950 although a few took place after that date
