- User Conditions:
- Administrative Context:
- One of the original guaranteed railways. Formed in 1855 and incorporated by Act of Parliament in the same year. Purchased by Government in 1906 but leased back to private management. Finally taken over by Government, Jan 1942. The original line ran from Surat via Baroda to Ahmadabad but was subsequently extended south to Bombay and west to Viramgam and Wadhwan in Kathiawar. In 1885 the Company took over the management of the Rajputana-Malwa system of state railways. There were several subsequent extensions/incorporations. At its greatest extent the B.B.C.I. line begining at Bombay ran north along the west coast to Viramgam, with branches from Surat to Amalner and from Anand to Ujjain. The Rajputana system began at Ahmadabad running through the Princely States of Rajputana with extensions to Agra and Cawnpore in the United Provinces and to Delhi and Bhatinda in the Punjab. From Ajmer a branch ran south through Central India to connect with the G.I.P.R. line at Khandwa.
