- Formed in 1896. Took over the management of the existing Burma state railway system (railway building in Burma had commenced in the 1870s). Subsequent extensions. Management resumed by Government 1928. Main line ran north from Rangoon to Myitkyina via Mandalay, with lateral branches, west to Prome and Bassein, south east to Tenasserim etc.
