User Conditions:
Administrative Context:: One of the original guaranteed companies. Formed privately in 1845. Reconstituted in 1847 and incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1849. Purchased by Government in 1880 but leased back to the Company to work under contract. Brought under Government management 1925. First section from Howrah(Calcutta) to Pandua in Hooghly District was opened in 1854. Main line subsequently ran north-west across Bihar to the Ganges then via Benares and Allahabad to Delhi, with numerous branches. Provided the only direct access to the port of Calcutta from the Punjab and was connected to all the other large railway systems of Northern India.
