- The Southern Mahratta Railway Company was formed in the UK in 1882. Original line (the East Deccan line) ran from Hotgi in Sholapur District to Gadag in Dharwar District, a distance of some 157 miles. Subsequent extensions to Castle Rock on the Goanese frontier, to Poona, and eastward to Bezwada on the Coromandel Coast. In 1902 took over the running of the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway (see L/AG/46/19). Also managed most of the railway system in Mysore State. In 1908 acquired the northern section of the Madras Railway (see L/AG/46/15) and was henceforward known as the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway. Placed under Government management Apr 1944.
