- Records of the India Office relating to the South Indian Railway Company
- Scope & Content:
- Formed in 1874 by the amalgamation of the Great Southern of India Railway Company (see IOR/L/AG/46/13) with the Carnatic Railway Company. Purchased by Government in 1891 but leased back to private management. In 1908 it acquired the Jalarpet-Mangalore section of the Madras Railway. At its greatest extent the S.I.R. served the whole of southern peninsular India, linking the Coromandel with the Malabar Coast and running as far south as Trivandrum and Tuticorin. It was placed under Government management in Apr 1944.
