PETTY PAPERS. VOL. XXVII. 'Census' of Ireland
- Scope & Content:
-
In ink-ruled columns, under the headings (by barony in the case of counties): 'Parishes', 'Places/Townlands', 'Number of People', 'Tituladoes Names', 'English (and Scots)', 'Irish'.
In at least two different clerical hands, with the county totals on the first leaves apparently in Petty's hand, and a few pencil notes by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne. For the dating, see A Census of Ireland, circa 1659, ed. Séamus Pender, for the Irish Manuscripts Commission (Dublin, 1939), pp. i, iv. The origin and exact purpose of this compilation are not certain. It was conjectured by W. H. Hardinge of the Landed Estates Record Office in Dublin, who brought it to light among the Bowood MSS in the mid 19th century, that the Down Survey surveyors must have been responsible (see his letters in Add. 72906, ff. 16-53, below; see also the note by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne, Add. 72876 K, f. 9, below), but there is no actual evidence of this, and it is possible that Petty acquired it as part of his statistical collections. Contemporary foliation of each section in the hand of the copyist. Formerly Bowood Box 12.
On large sheets, each section sewn on the left edge with vellum ties.
Ireland: `Census': [1659?].
