PETTY PAPERS. VOLS. XLV, XLVI. Correspondence and papers concerning Petty's 'double bottom' boat experiments and shipping generally; 1661-1684, n.d. Copies, early 19th cent. (watermarks 1802, 1804), made by Henry Schultes for the 2nd Marquess of Lansdowne, who had an interest in ship-building and sailing (see Slatter, 'Report', I, p. 200), of originals once in Petty's archive. Shortly after the copies were made, they appear to have been sold, randomly divided into two groups, and are now Bodleian MS Lyell Empt. 32 and National Maritime Museum SPB/16 (MS 8053); detailed references to these originals are given below. Further material is in Add. 72893, ff. 1-33 above; the enclosures in the Petty-Southwell correspondence, Add. 72852-72855 above, passim; the archives of the Royal Society (and in Sloane MS 243, a contemporary copy of papers in the Royal Society Register Books 1 and 2); and the Pepys Library, MSS 2870, pp. 477-503; 2874, pp. 1-30; and 2939, pp. 34-35; see Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College Cambridge, V, comp. C. S. Knighton (1981), pp. 111, 123, 174. A selection from all of this material is printed in The Double Bottom, edited by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne for the Roxburghe Club, for which the present copies were used, not the originals in the Bodleian Library and the National Maritime Museum; a few originals from these sources were not copied into the present volumes and therefore remain unpublished. The 6th Marquess of Lansdowne's foliation and annotations in connection with his edition appear throughout these volumes. See also Slatter, 'Report', I, pp. 200-210. Formerly Bowood Vols. 20, 21.
Two volumes. Contemporary vellum bindings.
