Motion Papers. Vols. l-lvii. The Pale Companion; [c.1988-1989?], n.d. Autograph and typewritten. Motion planned to write a sequence of ten novels, treating the developing life story of the principal protagonist, Francis Mayne, from the summer of 1968 onwards. This idea was modelled in part on Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time and its working title was Opera. However, only the first two novels, The Pale Companion (Viking, 1989) and Famous for the Creatures (Viking, 1991) were completed.
