Arranged alphabetically by writer. Includes letters to the Secretary relating to papers read at meetings; correspondence between the various officers of the Association (variously President, Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, editors of publications etc.); applications for grants; applications for membership; correspondence with printers relating to the Association’s publications; letters from the Association’s Solicitors and Auditors; letters relating to copyright, particularly copyright clearance requests required for musical illustrations to papers; correspondence relating to the setting up and awarding of the Dent Medal; general membership queries; correspondence relating to the setting up of Musica Britannica; letters concerning elections to office and other appointments; invitations and replies to special events; announcements of resignations and deaths.

In the original arrangement incoming letters were divided into ‘Internal’ and ‘External’ categories and boxed in batches of 18 months - 2 years. ‘Internal’ correspondence was that from existing members of the Association and ‘External’ from non-members. The sequence within the batches was roughly alphabetical. Since non-members often became members the present arrangement of the correspondence is in a single continuous alphabetical sequence. The status of any correspondent at the time of writing can be ascertained from the printed membership lists which appeared in most issues of Proceedings (BL pressmark Ac. 5162).
