TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vols. XCIII-CXXXII. William Trumbull: Miscellaneous official correspondence and papers, arranged chronologically; 1570-1632, n.d. Partly copies. Partly Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Dutch. The early volumes (Add. 72334-72338) cover the period circa 1599-1609, during which Trumbull acted as secretary to Sir Thomas Edmondes, at first in England and then, when his master became English Agent to the Archdukes, at Brussels. The great bulk of the collection (Add. 72339-72371) relates to Trumbull's career as English Agent and subsequently (1618) Resident Ambassador there between 1610 and 1625. This section comprises a wide range of diplomatic letters, documents and newsletters, together with many items concerning English domestic affairs and some personal correspondence. The two final volumes (Add. 72372, 72373) partly emanate from his duties as Clerk of the Privy Council, 1626-1635. Most of the letters were endorsed by Trumbull with the date of writing, or, when this was wanting, of receipt, and the correspondent's name. Volumes I-XVIII of the former Miscellaneous Series provide the basis of the present arrangement, with necessary adjustments made to the order, supplemented at various points by material taken largely from volumes XXXIV-XLII and partly from Trumbull Additional MSS. Undated items from these volumes are collected in the final section of Add. 72373. Most of the documents contained in Add. 72337-72354 are calendared in the 75th Report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission, vols. II-VI, which cover the period 1605-1618. Some of those in Add. 72338-72345 were printed in Winwood's Memorials of State (1725), vol. III. The arrangement is chronological by Old Style dating, that of 72337-72354 following the order given in the H.M.C. calendar. Although the H.M.C. volume-numbers and item-references are now superseded, printed texts may largely be matched with original documents by searching under the dates cited. From 1619 the order corresponds to English practice. From Misc. I-XIX, XXXIV-XLII, XLIV and Add. 14, 37.
Forty volumes, arranged chronologically.
