Althorp Papers. Vols. cccx-ccclxvii. Correspondence of Lady Spencer with Caroline, wife of John Howe, and sister of Richard, 1st Earl Howe; 1759-1814. For the earliest and latest periods many of Lady Spencer's letters are missing; otherwise the correspondence is substantially complete on both sides. Most of Lady Spencer's letters were returned to her son after her death, but those written while she was travelling on the Continent were said to have been promised by Mrs Howe to Lady Spencer's daughter and granddaughter, Lady Bessborough and Lady Caroline Lamb, and to her grandson, William, 6th Duke of Devonshire (see the letter from Lady Sligo to George, 2nd Earl Spencer, of July 1814); this accounts for some of the gaps in their correspondence.
Fifty-eight volumes. Unbound. 240 x 190 mm average size.
