Althorp Papers. Vols. dxcvii, dxcviii. Correspondence of and relating to French citizens seeking residence in Great Britain; 1803 (but predominantly Feb. 1806)-1807. There is also some correspondence relating to the growth of Roman Catholicism as a result. The Aliens Acts of 1793 and 1798 established a system of registration of aliens by means of declarations signed by them at ports of entry and certified into the Home Office by Customs Officers. In 1793 a superintendent of Aliens was appointed, a position which John Reed held during the Grenville administration. The main function of the Alien Office, situated in Crown Street, Westminster, was to register aliens and issue directions to local agents, mayors and local officials on their detention or expulsion, and make enquiries about the character of those foreigners seeking naturalisation. The Home Office continued to be responsible for formal correspondence, to issue instructions to officers at the ports, and to deal with applications for denization or naturalisation.
