Holroyd/Shaw Papers. Vols. cxv-cxxxiii. Correspondence and papers relating to tendering, contracts, marketing and publication of the biography; 1987-1996. . After a tendering exercise by the Society of Authors, acting for the Shaw Trustees, the contract to publish Michael Holroyd's biography of Shaw was awarded to Chatto and Windus on 22 Sept. 1987. American and translation rights, as well as those to publish paperback editions were decided over the following years. Much of the correspondence is from, or copied from, the files of Messrs Chatto and Windus, and significant correspondents, besides Michael Holroyd, include Carmen Cahill, Hilary Rubinstein, Hilary Laurie and Nicole Paulissen of Chatto and Windus, and Joe Fox of Random House. The arrangement is complicated by the absence of dates from many of the memoranda, notes, stickers, etc. in the collection, and the practice of circulating around and between offices earlier correspondence attached to later papers, and undated items have been placed adjacent to dated items in the sequences found in the files as received by the British Library. These papers also include correspondence relating to papers given and presentations attended by Michael Holroyd and other events arranged by his publishers and agents to promote the book.
