Coleridge Family Papers. Vols. lxxiii–cxii. Nisi Prius; 1874-1894. These volumes chiefly contain records of Nisi Prius cases heard at the Guildhall as part of the Middlesex Assizes. The volumes all include verdicts and sentences, and some also include questions from the judge for the jury to assist them in determining their verdicts. In addition to trial information, many of the volumes also contain additional evidence of Coleridge's activities, with notes included to explain gaps in the date sequence. These include other official duties, other cases and instances of illness. The series is formed of three distinct sub-series. The first, with volumes numbered 1-12, covers the period 1874-1878 and is described as 'Nisi Prius'. The second series is also numbered 1-12; it covers the years 1878-1882 and is occasionally referenced as 'N.S', probably standing for 'New Series'. The final series continues the numbering sequence begun in the second series, comprising volumes 13-28. These volumes are described as 'Town Nisi Prius'. Volumes 1-4 of the first series contain a chronological list of the cases in the front page, the remaining volumes are Indexed under the Plaintiffs' names only.
Forty volumes. 323mm x 211mm. The volumes in the first sub-series have buff coloured spines and purple water-marked material-covered boards; 'Nisi Prius' and the volume number are embossed in gold on the spine, and 'the Honble Lord Coleridge' embossed in gold on the front board. The second sub-series is bound in identical fashion. In the third sub-series, volumes 13-21 have dark maroon/brown spines and boards, while volumes 22-28 have dark green boards and dark maroon spines, the boards embossed 'The Rt. Honble Lord Coleridge Lord Chief Justice of England'. The title and volume numbers are embossed in gold as for the earlier series.
