STERN PAPERS. Vols. CXLV-CLVII. Letters to Felice by Franz Kafka. Comprising typescript I in five volumes; typescript II in six volumes; auxiliary material in one volume; miscellaneous material in one volume. Kafka’s Letters to Felice was a collaborative translation between James Stern and Lila (Elizabeth) Duckworth. Stern’s correspondence with Schocken (Adds. 80898-80899) is mainly taken up with the translation of these letters and his earlier translations of Kafka’s Letters to Milena, (see Add. 80995 ff.1-45). As the correspondence reveals, the process of translating both series of letters was a long drawn out affair made more complicated by the involvement of a disparate team of editors and advisors, and the sudden deaths of several senior editors, including Salamon Schocken himself. The translation was published by Schocken Books, New York, in 1973 and by Secker and Warburg, London, in 1974.
