John Gielgud Archive. Two scrapbooks, containing theatrical and general cuttings, together with handwritten copies of verse and prose excerpts, in the manner of a commonplace-book, pasted into two volumes of Epithalamia Oxoniensia; 1813-1817. Mostly printed. 81325 has the heraldic bookplate of Sir Henry Irving, the greatest actor of his day and the first to be knighted, and the stage partner for twenty years of Ellen Terry, Gielgud’s great-aunt. There is nothing to confirm that the volumes did belong to Irving except for the bookplate, although Gielgud told a friend (the actor Richard Bebb) who enquired about the volumes that they had belonged to Irving and had come to him through his great-aunt.
Both vols. 370 x 240 mm. Full leather binding, heavily worn, with spines replaced; pastedowns and endpapers in each volume in a patterned silk fabric with gilt highlights.
