SOUTHWELL PAPERS. Letterbooks of Francis Parry, who accompanied Sir R. Southwell to Portugal in 1668 and remained as Resident till 1680 (except from Sept. 1676 to Nov. 1677, when he was in England). They comprise copies of official and other letters to many correspondents, including Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington, Secretary of State (1662-1674) and Lord Chamberlain (1674- 1681), Joseph (afterwards Sir J.) Williamson, Clerk to the Council and (1674-1678) Secretary of State, Robert Spencer, Earl of Sunderland, Ambassador extraordinary to Spain (1671-2), Secretary of State (1678-1681), William (afterwards Sir W.) Godolphin, Envoy and (from 1671) Ambassador to Spain, Henry Howard, Lord Howard of Castle-Rising (afterwards 6th Duke of Norfolk), Ambassador to Morocco, John Middleton, Earl of Middleton, and William O'Brien, Earl of Inchiquin, successively Governors of Tangier, Sir "Leonell" [i.e. Leoline] Jenkins, British Plenipotentiary at Nymwegen, Dr. Robert Newlin, President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, Dr. Thomas Barlow, Provost of Queen's College, Oxford, afterwards (1675-1691) Bishop of Lincoln, Edward Meredith, the Roman Catholic controversialist, secretary to Sir W. Godolphin, Humphrey Henchman, Bishop of London (1663- 1675), Sir Robert Southwell, Samuel Pepys, and others. Two volumes. Paper; ff. 284, 273.
