A, Section I. PAPERS OF SIR PHILIP PERCEVAL
EGMONT PAPERS. Vols. I-XII. Egmont MSS. 1-12. Correspondence, etc., of Sir Philip Perceval, knt. 1636 (b. 1605, d. 1647), Clerk and Registrar of the Court of Wards and Liveries, Ireland, and Commissary- General of Victuals for the Army in Ireland 1642-1646, together with correspondence and papers of Sergeant, later Captain, Thomas Reymond, commanding the garrison of Sir Philip's castle at Liscarroll, co. Cork, partly also relating to the loss of his castle at Temple Connell, co. Cork, 16 Sept. 1643; 1628-1647, n.d. The papers comprise royal grants, affidavits, inquisitions, bonds, and other legal documents, also accompts, receipts, instructions, parliamentary papers and correspondence, official and occasionally personal, with Murrough O'Brien, 6th Baron and (1654) 1st Earl of Inchiquin, Walter Butler, Marquess and (1661) lst Duke of Ormond, and his wife, Elizabeth, Roger Boyle, Lord Boyle, Baron of Broghill (1st Earl of Orrery 1660), Maurice Roche, 8th Viscount Roche of Fermoy, Sir Hardresse Waller, Sir William St. Leger, and Major-General William Jephson; also correspondence, mostly private and concerning estates, with Sir Philip's sisters Norris, wife of Joseph Mulys, and Alice, also with her husband, Richard Fitzgerald; with his brothers-in-law Sir Percy Smyth and Sir Paul Davys, his nephew Oliver Buller and his cousin Sir James Montgomerie, and correspondence (relating mostly to his purchase of Burton Manor, co. Som., and its administration) with his cousins Edmund Perceval, of Ringwood, co. Southt., and James Perceval, of Weston, co. Som., also with John Jesop and Thomas Crosse. Most of the remaining correspondents are his agents and assistants writing on official and estate business, principally Thomas Pigott and his brother Alexander, of Dublin, Cnoghor O'Callaghan of Beallabalagh, co. Cork, agent to 1637, Valentine Savage of Dublin, John Hodder, John Barry, Richard Gething (1st Bart. 1665), Swithin Walton, William Dobbins of London, William Beale, and Richard Stokes. Many of the papers have been printed in Calendar of State Papers, Ireland and by the Historical Manuscripts Commission, Report on the Manuscripts of the Earl of Egmont, i, 1905, pp. 60-483. The papers are preceded (Vol. I A, ff.1-11) by earlier material, mostly copies of royal letters, etc., 1541-1607, made for Sir Philip, but including an original covenant between James Perceval, the elder, of Weston-in-Gordano, co. Som., and George Luttrell, of Dunster Castle, co. Som., for renting land at Carhampton, 1 Jan. 1608. The original chronological order has been retained, with corrections where necessary, but the arrangement of one volume to one O.S. year (after Add. MS. 46921) has been abandoned. See also Add. MSS. 47052, 47145 below. Twelve volumes.
