EGMONT PAPERS. Vols. XXIV-XXVII. Egmont MSS. 24-37. Correspondence, etc., largely of and on behalf of Sir Philip Perceval, 2nd Bart. (b. 1656, d. 1680); 1665-1680, n.d. Partly Latin and French. The papers comprise accompts, partly personal, rent-rolls, inventories, legal papers, lists of deeds, correspondence, etc. (largely relating to his Irish estates) of his mother Katherine (d. 1679), her brother, Sir Robert Southwell (b. 1635, d. 1702), partly while Envoy in Berlin, 1680, Sir Robert's father, the elder Robert Southwell (b. 1607, d. 1677), and Robert Southwell's wife, Helena, with members of their family, including Sir Robert's brother, George, and Sir Philip's brothers Robert, at Christ's College, Cambridge, and Lincoln's Inn, and John, at Westminster, Christ Church, Oxford, and Lincoln's Inn, also his sister, Katherine, and her husband, Randall Clayton, and attorney, Michael Tisdall, of Dublin, as well as with tenants, merchants, lawyers, and agents, mostly in Ireland, including James Dogherty, of Imogane, near Mallow, agent in co. Cork to Apr. 1668, Richard Conron, his successor, William Gonne, of Gortroe, agent in co. Limerick, and his assistant, Roger Jones, Robert Bowyer, Robert Southwell's agent at Kinsale, William Taylor, the elder, Valentine Savage, of Dublin, and his son and (from July 1670) successor, Philip Savage, Peter Holmes, lawyer, of Dublin, his son George Holmes, also Robert Holmes. The papers also include letters to Sir Philip from college friends, and correspondence, accompts, etc., of him and his tutors, etc., at Christ Church, Oxford, and Lincoln's Inn, and on a visit to France and Italy (Sept. 1676-March 1679); particularly represented are his tutors, John Gailhard and Alexandre de Rasigade, at Angers, Rome, and Paris, and on his travels, and correspondence of his mother, Katherine, at Saumur, Terfort, and Paris, Oct. 1677-March 1679. Amongst other subjects covered by the papers are the deaths, funerals, etc., of Sir Philip's father, Sir John, in Vol. XXIV A, also of his grandmother, Katherine, née Usher (d. 20 Nov. 1669), widow of Sir Philip Perceval, knt., and of Robert Southwell, the elder (d. 2 Apr. 1677), as well as the murder in the Strand of Sir Philip's brother Robert (d. 6 June 1677), the building of Burton House, co. Cork, by William and Benjamin Kenn, 1670-1673, a lawsuit with Nicholas Weston, joiner, of Dublin, 1671-1677, gifts from impropriations by the Hon. Robert Boyle through his agent John Smith to poor clergy in Munster, 1672-1676, and the purchase of lands from John King, 1st Baron Kingston, 1674-1677. The original order has been preserved, with corrections as necessary, but the original arrangement by O.S. years has been abandoned. Twenty-three volumes.
