A, Section VI. PAPERS OF THE 1ST LORD EGMONT
EGMONT PAPERS. Vols. XLV-LXXXI. Egmont MSS. 127-146, 110-124. Estate and other correspondence and papers of Sir John Perceval, 5th Bart. 1691 (b. 1683, d. 1748), Baron Perceval 1715, Viscount Perceval 1723, 1st Earl of Egmont 1723; 1699-1748, n.d. The correspondence is mostly with successive stewards of his estates in co. Cork; i.e., his cousin William Taylor, the elder (d. 29 Nov. 1712), continuing from the previous series; Taylor's son Berkeley Taylor, M.P. (d. 25 June 1736); their assistant and accountant William Turner; William Taylor, the younger; and Richard Purcell, the younger; also with various lawyers, mostly at Dublin. The original arrangement has been retained, with corrections as necessary. Each volume has an index of the original contents at the end, and, from 46867, a 'Conclusion' with personal dates and details. One of the original volumes is missing between Add. MSS. 46965 and 46966. At the end of Add. MSS. 46867-46969 is placed correspondence relating to Lord Egmont's Essex estates at Great and Little Clacton and at Little Holland (bought 30 Dec. 1714, sold 4 Nov. 1717), mostly with his respective stewards, William Feild and William Fisher. Amongst the other subjects dealt with are ecclesiastical patronage, electoral and parliamentary affairs, prospecting for coal, copper, and lead, attempts to introduce the cultivation of hemp and flax, the quarrying at Burton and Templemurry of marble chimney pieces, tables, cisterns, etc., both black and white, and their transport to Dublin, London and elsewhere, the establishment in 1709 and dissolution in 1720 of a charity school and linen factory at Churchtown, the construction of a new church at Burton, proposed barracks at Churchtown, militia personnel, arms, and equipment, particularly Lord Egmont's independent troop of horse, flood prevention at Kanturk, the prices of goods at Cork, the sale of the Liscarroll estate to Arthur Mohun St Leger, 3rd Viscount Doneraile, and subsequent disputes over the manor courts of Liscarroll, a proposed Chapel of Ease at Kanturk, the establishment of a linen factory at Annagh, the failure of a Grammar School at Burton, a riot at Kinsale in 1731, and a dispute about a court house at Downdeady. Correspondence between Lord Egmont and George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne, in this section of the papers, and in Add. MSS. 47025-47033, and 47060-47071, has been printed by B. Rand, Berkeley and Percival, 1914. See also Add. MSS. 47038-47048, 47057-47072, 47087, 47088, 47101, 47114-47136, 47145, 47146, 47158, 47204-47209, 47213 below. Thirty-eight volumes.
