Correspondence, contracts and press cuttings relating to the works of Helen Bannerman, particularly The Story of Little Black Sambo, first published by Grant Richards, 1899,, and subsequently re-issued by Chatto and Windus, who passed their children’s book list to The Bodley Head in 1988. The rights were subsequently taken over by Reinhardt Books, who devolved distribution to Ragged Bears and in 1996 transferred all publishing rights to that company. The files include correspondence transferred from Chatto and Windus in 1988. The correspondence also includes, particularly from 1980, requests to have the work withdrawn on racist grounds, and responses to these requests.
