- Each quarter, selectors appointed by the Board of Management selected one book as the Society’s Choice. This book was sent to members as part of their membership. The selectors also chose Recommendations, books of special merit. The books were submitted by publishers. Over the years some of the most important names in British poetry and literature acted as selectors, including: Edwin Muir, Nevill Coghill, Cyril Connolly, Vita Sackville-West, Roy Fuller, W. H. Auden, Al Alvarez, Anthony Thwaite, Ted Hughes, Alan Brownjohn, Frank Kermode, John Fuller, Terry Eagleton, Philip Larkin (who, having turned down an earlier invitation, accepted in 1972), Patricia Beer, Peter Porter, Andrew Motion, Gillian Clarke, Fleur Adcock, and Edwin Morgan. Correspondence with each is present in the files, as is Board of Management correspondence discussing candidates for the positions. It was a paid position, with the fee ranging from 50 guineas in 1954 to £600 in 1992. For correspondence relating to the submissions see Add MS 88984/4/8-12 and Add MS 88984/5/1-28.
